Uses for Olive Oil -- it's not just for cooking!
Most all of the applications for Olive Oil listed below require only a small amount of Olive Oil. Olive Oil is not only an excellent product to have around for our culinary creations, it's a smart buy because you can use it in place of so many things as an extremely economic alternative (and it's an environmentally conscious choice).
Olive Oil For Cooking
Olive Oil makes a great ingredient for pretty much any dish. Here are some of our favorite ways to incorporate Olive Oil (and replace other unhealthy oils) into our food.
- People are always skeptical, thinking there will be a funny bitter taste, but you can replace the vegetable oil called for in a cake, with Olive Oil. The cake will actually taste better and be much lighter -- it's a fantastic substitution.
- Olive Oil is always a healthier alternative to butter. Add fresh herbs (or just serve it plain!) to a small plate of olive oil for dipping bread instead of slathering it with butter. It also makes for a nicer presentation at dinner parties as well!
- Olive oil makes the best salad dressing! Always a favorite, is Olive Oil mixed with fresh lime juice, salt and pepper. That's it! Add a couple of tablespoons of vinegar for the added health benefit of lowering the GI properties and if you like a little extra zing.
- Cooking spray can ruin pans. So put Olive Oil in a spray bottle and use it to prepare your pans for non-stick cooking.
- Olive Oil is excellent for preparing grilled vegetables. Throw all the vegetables you want to grill in a bowl, drizzle Olive Oil over them, sprinkle with salt, pepper and garlic powder. Mix to coat and grill.
Olive Oil for the Skin
We all Know Olive Oil is good for the skin, particularly when you ingest it. However, here are some other beneficial uses for Olive Oil externally for skin.
- Olive Oil can remove makeup.
- Olive Oil can be applied directly to your skin to moisturize it.
- Olive Oil can be used on your feet to help get rid of calluses and tough spots.
- You can use Olive Oil on your fingertips to moisturize and soften cuticles.
- Use Olive Oil to get rid of that knobby feeling skin on your elbows.
- Mix Olive Oil with sea salt or sugar to make a skin exfoliating scrub for your body and/or face.
Olive Oil Around the House
Olive Oil is also a great non-toxic and natural item to use around the house. We have lots of young children and pets running around our households and we have to always be cautious about what is accessible to them. Here are some ways to use Olive Oil in place of some toxic/chemical alternatives.
- Olive Oil can be used to oil creaky doors and creaky toys instead of WD-40.
- Olive Oil can be used to polish brass and silver.
- Mix Olive Oil with lemon juice or orange juice in a spray bottle to polish your wood furniture. If you add vinegar to the Olive Oil instead of the citrus juice, it can clean and shine a hard wood floor. (For either of these applications, test a small hidden area first.)
- Olive Oil can remove paint. You have to let it soak a bit.
Olive Oil On Your Hair
- Olive Oil can deep condition your hair. After shampooing, apply Olive Oil to wet hair and let it sit for about five minutes. Rinse well.
- Olive Oil can help take the frizz out of hair. Apply about a dime size amount to DRY frizzy hair and work through.
- Olive Oil can help you get gum and candy out of your kids hair....or yours.
Medicinal Properties of Olive Oil
- Our mother always told us that Olive Oil could be used in the ears to help relieve ear pain from an ear infection. We didn't believe her, but checked it out and it turns out, Olive Oil can be used to clean the ears and help with an ear infection. (Check with your doctor before doing this as symptoms and situations vary.)
- We've heard a little taste of Olive Oil can help get rid of a cough that's coming from an itch or a "tickle" in the back of the throat. Sounds like it would work and it can't hurt to try.
Olive Oil For Your Pets
- We always coated our Dog's food with Olive Oil to get rid of Hot Spots (dry, itchy spots on the Skin). After about a week, there was an improvement -- after about two weeks -- they were gone!
- We haven't tested this one, but have heard you can mix Olive Oil with cat food to help control hairballs.
- Use Olive Oil to help remove tics.
- Olive Oil can help get sticky matted hair separated.
